Productivity Challenge

The greatest challenge being faced by the diary industry across the world is increasing the productivity of cattle since the supply is unable to meet the demand. It is estimated that, in India, the average milk supply per annum needs to double to meet the annual milk requirement. By 2020, the projected annual milk production requirement of India is 200-210 MT. The challenge of increasing the milk production is also fuelled by the fact that the cattle feed price – which accounts for about 70% of the milk production cost – has soared over the past few years increasing by more than 82%

Digestive challenge

Milk contains plenty of vitamins and minerals that are crucial to the all round development of every individual. Also, milk is accepted throughout the world as the most abundant source of calcium cheaply available to mankind. The ability to digest the milk sugar (lactose, 4-5% of milk) is genetically programmed to decrease in humans after weaning as the food intake diversifies. In some people, this might result in an inability to digest lactose – a condition termed as lactose intolerance. It is estimated that about 70% of the world population is lactose intolerant. People who avoid milk and dairy products because of being lactose intolerant are prone to calcium deficiency resulting in conditions such as osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency.
